Now that is one large Ape.  Here are a few goodies from Tinman Miniatures.  The Horde Warrior 1 is now available for purchase.  The price of $5.95 for the Horde Warrior is a great deal considering how large the figure is (49mm head to toe.).

Fight's On! just sent along some pictures of how their products could be used in a classic game of Ogre miniatures.  I first saw them using the products a few months ago.  I especially loved the look of the missiles of which they make 3 types (Air to Air, Surface to Air and Air to Ship).  The missiles make a battlefield come alive.  Check Fight's On webstore for a full list of products.

I have always been a fan of various 28mm Pulp Sci-Fi bots.  Here are just a few that I have found over the years.  Hydra Miniatures came out with two fantastic sculpts for their Retro Raygun line of miniatures.  Of course there have been others and here are just a few.  Here is a nice writeup by Germy on building a pulp robot.

From the first time I saw the Craig Rowlings Killer B 28mm Sci-Fi Pulp GAFDOZ miniature line, I became a big fan.  The miniatures are sculpted by Bob Olley and Brad Shier.  Killer B is coming out with an 1950's style range line called Star Patrol.  To order these figures email Craig or via online at Recreational Conflict.

Rebel Minis releases 5051 First Contact box set.

From Rebel Minis

First Contact is a supplement to 5150, the original set of sci-fi rules from Two Hour Wargames. First Contact revolves around a rebellion on a small planet where the colonists have decided to break away from their home world. It documents the war between Earth and her first colony, Mars.

But what starts out as a local conflict erupts into something larger as the rebels, known as the Sahadeen, receive help from an unexpected source, the ever-expanding empire of Gaea Prime.

Here is something a little twisted coming from Eureka Miniatures called Jurassic Reich.  It appears to be part pulp, part weird war and is designed as a 28mm game that has Nazis & dinosaurs.  The planned release date for the Jurassic line of figures is July 2010.

Just received some really nice resin models from Quantum Gothic.  The models are made of high quality resin.  Each model comes in a ziplock type plastic baggie and is protected with bubble wrap.  Each model also comes with directions on how to build them.  Most of the resin models are designed for 28mm game play, however many of the pieces could be used in 15mm scale.

Mark Mondragon's monster Leviathan/Crusader is finally taking shape and looks to be almost ready for market.  The model is probably the most detailed 15mm/28mm walker ever created.  I shudder to think how much this sucker is going to cost given all the pieces. Here is the first look of the Khurasan Miniatures Mekanoid Hatchet.  This is a prototype and the finished product might look a little different.  Pulse cannons are missing from the bays, and the right engine is not on.  This sucker will be armed with seven bays for pulse cannons, and a battery of missiles in a silo in the top rear.

What is really cool about this model is the engines are positionable as well as the ship itself. The flight rod goes into a ball, so the craft can be positioned at various angles.  Check out Mark's blog for a nice little writeup.

Here are some upcoming Squamata Imperialis from Critical Mass Games.  I must say these are pretty wacky looking.  I can not really get a good feel for them.

From Critical Mass Games

The Squamata are a disposable asset as far as the rest of Kaamados society is concerned. Made up from the numerous genetic anomalies and birth defects that are part and parcel of their reproduction cycle the Squamata that aren’t eaten by their parents and siblings are pressed in to military service where they serve as battlefield servitors, cannon fodder, unwitting suicide bombers and a mobile emergency food supply.

The physical appearance of the Squamata varies considerably although they average 3’6” and characterized by the heavy boots, large gauntlets and hood that all combine to obscure any and all traces of their imperfections and deformities.

Well it is finally here.  The War Rocket miniature line by Hydra Miniatures is now available.  These look great and are going to be a joy to use.  You have a choice of 4 different factions including (Imperial, Galacteer, Valkeeri & Zenithian).  My favorite right now is the  Imperial Class 2 rocket ship.  I find it very Flash Gordon looking.  The paint job also makes it look outstanding.

For those attending Salute, you may want to try and track down Rob Parkinson.  Rob has worked full time & freelance for many years as an artist and has a diverse background working in many different mediums over the years and is more than happy to discuss life as a professional artist, or even commissions if you need his services.

As abit of fun Rob will also be carrying around some spot Critical Mass Game prizes during the day, to win a prize, simply find Rob (he will be in CMG attire), at 11am, 1pm or 3pm and announce to him, "thats a fine pair of W.P.'s your wearing today Rob".

Note - One prize per time slot. The first person to do this will win a spot prize, prizes are limited to one per person on the day (stalkers need not apply). Rob's decision is final.

Khurasan Miniatures really produced a winner with the L-HAC.  Mine arrived last week and I went to town on it.  All I can say is wow.  The L-HAC is a really impressive Mech/Robot.  The model comes in 11 pieces.  The Legs and feet are metal, while the rest of the model is resin.  The way the model was designed, you're able to attached many of the parts in various positions.  The Shoulders, Head and body have ball joints which allow for a wide variety of positions.  I thought about using magnets, but couldn't hold off on building it.

Topgun Marketing LLC is currently running a painting competition on their 15mm Grav Tank lineup.  The paint job of the Grav Tanks by Richard Meaden below is absolutely outstanding.  I think people are going to have a hard time coming up with a better and more unique paint scheme.

The vehicles are made of solid polyurethane resin, with metal weapons and accessories.  The larger vehicles are 85mm's long x 55mm's wide, and the smaller ones are 75mm's x 43mm's, making them compatible with all of the other 15mm grav tanks and infantry fighting vehicles on the market, at least in terms of size.

The tanks come in a smooth-hulled variant, which comes without all of the circular surface detailing, for a sleeker, more advanced look or with

In the world of 3D software, Zbrush seems to really stand out.  Now I am no 3D designer, but visiting the Pixologic Zbrush site is definitely worth the visit.  Lots of cool stuff there to check out.  I also got to say that if you're in the miniature business, you can really get some amazing ideas for miniatures lines.  You can find sculptors that use this software on the site are absolutely amazing.

Here are some shots of some Back2Base-IX fight stands in action.  The ships used are from GW's Epic range and are solid metal.  As you can see one of the ships is quite large being a Space Marine Thunderhawk Gunship.  The ships could have easily been spaceships from any of the various manufactures.  All ships were held pretty tight and could easily be moved during game play and turned upside down without losing the magnetic connection.  The system works really well and is a perfect solution for any gamer requiring flight stands.  As a side note, I didn't remove the protective paper on the bottom of the bases yet, so that is why they look light brown.

Notice the only thing required on the ships are little magnets.
These round magnets along with square magnets are supplied with the bases.

Here is a shot of the Back2Base-IX stands next to my own stands.
I created my stands using 2 different sized square brass rods.
Both work, but Back2Base-IX design is much more elegant.

There is a fantastic company out there called Back2Base-iX that makes magnetic flight stands.  The stands are made out of durable acrylic.  The stands work using magnets to attach planes/spaceships/grav tanks or whatever.  You get 4 stands for $10.95.  What is great about these stands is you can use them for multiple roles.  Since they use magnets all you have to do use equip your spaceships/airplanes/gav vehicles with magnets and your ready to go.  This means you probably only need 1 or 2 packs of stands for all your flight stand requirements.

Each flight stand is comprised of a 1 base, 1 peg,
1 Round 3mm (diameter) x 2mm (thickness) Magnet, 1 3mm Square Magnet.

The square magnet goes into the flight stand.
The round one goes into your spaceship/gav vehicle/airplane or whatever.
Important note - make sure of polarity before gluing the magnets into their proper places.

Khurasan Miniatures - Molokon-Rattler (15mm Spider/Mech type figure).

From Khurasan Miniature's Blog

Mike Broadbent has created the 15mm Rattler model, which has six legs which plug into holes along the main chassis of the unit, as well as a gun torso and head, which like the legs is posable. As can be seen from the photo below, there's some flexibility in the models -- for instance, simply remove the hatchet head of the Rattler and its whole looks changes to a more arachnoid look. These are also quite suitable as sentry robots or similar for 28mm gaming.

Xmarx has a fantastic terrain set that not only looks good, but is an amazing deal.  You're not going to find a better deal than this unless you're buying something used.  The whole set sells for under $10.  Something like this from most other companies would cost at least double that.

The Geo Dome set consists of 9 pieces:
2 Small Domes
1 Large Dome
4 Corridors
1 3-way Junction
1 4-way Junction

The set assembled as shown measures approximatley 10" long, 6 1/2" wide and the large dome is 1 1/4" tall.

Critical Mass Games is coming out with some additional weapons for the ARC Fleet.

We have had quite a few emails off people requesting gun variants amongst the ARC fleet range. As with everything this takes and with such an extensive range planned out we have to fit projects in where we can around the current schedule. Our first step was to get Rob on the case and he came up with 12 new concepts of which 6 where then selected for sculpting by Phil.

These are currently off being moulded and once cast well be on there way back to Phil to arm up some AF troops and Mercenaries (if Phils puttying arm begins to twitch!)

Well I just received 3 1/300 terrain pieces from Snapdragon Studio.  The pieces are far better than I had thought they would be.  They are cast in a very strong resin, which seem heavier than most.  The models themselves are beautiful.   The bad news is......these are probably in limited supply.  If your interested in any of these buildings get them while their still around.

I hate to say this, but I have been playing Epic with a few friends lately and well sort of liking it.  Anyway I thought some people might like to see what the current Epic Land Raider looks like.  I do think it is sort of cool seeing the progression.  There might be other versions of it, but I haven't see them yet.  I know there was a plastic version of the original meal version.  I do think the newest version is probably the nicest looking and is a little larger than its predecessors.  At $35 for 4 though, you probably will not pick up too many.

If you're interested in trying out Epic Amrmageden, the rules are free.   I came across a website that has some really cool Epic army cards and updated versions www.epicarmycard.com.

Just received some really nice 6mm-10mm vehicles from Reiver Castings.  The vehicles are very generic and would work well with any sci-fi human army list.  The vehicles come in 3 sizes (Small, Medium and Large).  The large vehicles are more 10mm scale.  The small vehicles IMO are best suited for 6mm scale.

I have been very tight lipped about some new 15mm coming soon.

Scott of Four Color Figures and Superfigs is now sharing some of that information.  When I hear more I will be sure to let you know.

Work continues apace on the company-level 15mm sci-fi rules I am working on. Also got to see some pics of the first greens and they look very nice. Can't share them as of yet, but I think many 15mm sci-fi fans will applaud another source of great infantry.

Did I mention we'll be doing some walkers, too? Well now I am mentioning it. I'll have a gander at the first batch of those this coming week. They'll be a mix of resin bodies with metal legs and arm-based weapon mounts. No hands or obvious close combat weapons on these guys, and they should be low-slung affairs, with low centers of gravity. We'll see!

Pole Bitwy is a new wargaming company from Poland. They are targeting 15mm / 1:100 scale miniatures, but they also plan on releasing several 6mm and 28mm figures.

Under development is a post-apocalypse skirmish game in 15mm. You can find more information about this planned product here: http://www.WorldWideWater.pl also check out their other 15mm greens and yes 15mm Apes

Since I really like bugs, here are some bug greens (Spiders) that they are working on.  These spiders are for their 15mm range although you could use them for 6mm or 28mm.

Just finished putting together the Solar Panel Array by Xmarx.  This is the perfect terrain piece for any games from 6mm to 28mm ("Scale Neutral").  The Solar Panel Array comes in an eight piece set (1 base, 1 rod, 3 panels & 3 panel holder pieces) and is very easy to construct.  Each panel holder has a little key pad which could be used to turn on and off the panel or whatever a game may require, if anything.

I went to a local con here in Round Rock Texas a few weekends ago called Millennium Con.  During the con I found a really nice guy parting with a bunch of OOP GW Epic stuff.  Some of the figures I had never seen before.  I ended getting a really good deals on the figures I bought.  The ones I was really interested in were the OOP drop pods.  The pods came in 3 versions including: Closed pod, open pod with some sort of tower or tower weapon and open pod with some sort of gun.  The pods are based on a 30mm round base.  Check out my other Drop Pod post for other pods from other companies.

Just recently I picked up a bunch of Renegade Legion Anti-Grav Tanks.  I really like the bodies of the tanks, but the turrets leave something to be desired IMO.  They are small and the guns are old school, which means extremely flimsy and bend way too easily.   FASA no longer produces these models, but the good news is you can buy them at CinC.  Bases used are 30x40 and 20x40 (Width/Length).

Below are the 6mm LRM Turret & SRM Turret terrain/Heavy weapon pieces from Xmarx.  Both these products are 'scale neutral' and could easily be used in any Sci-Fi games from 6mm-28mm.  You will need to file a few areas of the models to remove excess resin, but it is very easy to do.  Most of the excess resin is rice paper thin and can be easily removed by hand.  Xmarx does make a bigger version of the LMR turret in 25mm scale.

Ravenstar Studios makes some really nice looking Sci-Fi spaceships and fighters.  They also are now producing the Cold Navy line of Spaceships.  The Cold Navy line went through a rough patch of a few years of broken release promises from other companies before Ravenstar Studios finally picked them up.  I was able to pick up the ships when the original Cold Navy owner made them.   The Cold Navy line is now made in Resin vs the previous metal versions.  There were 4 factions originally planned including The Terran Republic Navy, The Mauridian Expeditionary Forces, The Kharadorn Royal Navy, and The Deisho People's Defense Force.

Well I was just visiting a store in the U.S. called Target.  It is basically an upscale Walmart.  Any way, I was cruising the toy isles and what do I find, but some cool 15mm looking (Actually 1/64) Jada Battle Machines.  The retail price is $2.99 and seems like a bargin.  The Battle Machines are cars and trucks with guns, how cool is that.  They of course come pre-assembled/pre-painted and ready for gaming.  As it turns out Steve Jackson is local to Texas and there is a large Car Wars group here.  There are a few Car Wars type games out there to include Steve Jackson's Car Wars, Autoduel, Axles and Alloys (by Owen Cooper), Road Rage (by Chris Johnston) and Speed Rally There is also a good Yahoo Group

Back in the day Ral Partha used to produce Ogre models for Steve Jackson Games.  Today you can find similar Ogre models at Warhouse 23.  IMO the earlier versions produced by Ral Partha were actually better cast than today's versions.  Ral Partha's versions also contained more metal making them heavier.  If you look at Ral Partha models vs the newer Steve Jackson Games models, you can see that the new versions have had a few modifications made to them.  If you have a chance to get the earlier Ral Partha figures, I would definitely get those.

The origin of the walking dead remains shrouded in mystery. What is known is that the cause is a highly contagious disease passed on through any form of ingestion or contact with their bodily fluids. Whole worlds can be overtaken unless swift and decisive military action is taken by the defending garrisons.

Often military commanders have been engaged in combat only to realise that a far more dangerous foe is present on the battlefield when zombies wander into the warzone hunting for fresh meat.

On Monday I received a package from ZandrisIV Miniatures and I must say I was pleasantly surprised.  For some reason I originally thought the miniatures were resin, but what I received was in fact good old fashion metal.  Oh yea.  ZandrisIV Miniatures produces both Starships and 6mm Microarmour.   I really like the futuristic Kasturi Hovertank and Derhaka Recon Skimmer.  ZandrisIV Miniatures doesn't have a large selection in the 6mm scale, but what they do have are very nice.  If you're and Ogre fan you might find these vehicles to be just the ticket.

Want a cool Bug army that would work for 6mm, 15mm or even 28mm.  Well check out this army that I created using a few models from various gaming companies.  I used 3 base sizes to include 40x15mm, 40x30mm and 50mm round bases.

6mm (Ground Zero Games - Dirtside DSM-130 - A {Bug Pack})
15mm (Khurasan Miniatures - (Parasachnid Bioweapons)
28mm (I want to say these were old GZG Arachnid like Warrior Bugs).  You may be able to substitute these with  Mongoose Publishing's Arachnid Warrior Bugs, from the OOP game Starship Troopers.

It seem that a lot of gamers are sort of mixed about how to base their 6mm infantry and vehicles if at all.  Last night I decided to really think about the best way to go about doing this and I think I have come up with some good solutions.

Normal Sized Infantry - base them 3 to 5 per stand using a 40x15mm stand.
Large Infantry - base them 1 to 3 per stand using a 40x20mm stand
Small Vehicles - base them 2 to 3 per stand using a 40x20mm stand.
Large Vehicles - base them 1 per stand using a 30x40mm stand.
Very Large Vehicles/Monsters - Here I think you can use either square or round bases.  For Vehicles I will probably opt for either a 40x40mm stand or larger.  For Monsters I tend to like round bases and I am thinking 40mm or 50mm should be sufficient.

Below are some samples of Plasmablast Games vehicles for both the Progenitor and Orbital Combine forces.

Top and middle row are the Plasmablast Games Progenitor Vehicles

From the Four-Color Figs Blog

SuperSystem Cover Art Revealed!

Hey, folks! We're getting closer to the release of SuperSystem 3rd ed. Here's a sneak peak of the cover painting by Joseph Urban. The logo is just a place holder--we'll be using our traditional orange and yellow logo for the final version.

This great piece depicts a battle between Thunderfist and the Ego-Bot!

We're finalizing the layout now, so a November 22 release looks good. I am also working on getting a small number of books printed out in a spiral bound format, with color covers and b&w interiors. Lulu is also an option. We'll see.

Separately, I still have a number of Superfigs model stats to revise for the free PDF release of the Official SuperSystem Teams and Characters.

I'll post more on this when I know it!

This month (November 23rd) will see the release of the Protolene Khanates army.  The release will feature the first alien race for Critical Mass Games and let me tell you, you're going to love them.    The troop types will include Scouts (16 variants), Predators (14 variants) and Hunters (14 variants).  That is a ton of figures.

The weapons they use include Particle Cannons, Heavy Assault Laser, Sniper Rifles, Assault Lasers, Laser Carbines and Laser Pistols.

The Scouts are lighter armored than the Predators and Hunters, yet they make up for it in all around fire power.  The Predators carry laser pistols, so I assume they are more for close combat action.  The Hunters are a little heavier armored and carry the bigger laser weapons to include the Assault Lasers, Heavy Assault Lasers and Particle Cannons.

It is a little hard to see the difference between a Scout and the Hunters.  The Hunters have bigger shoulder pads with a little ridge on them.  The Scouts have more of a rounded shoulder pad.  Hunters also don't carry Sniper Rifles.

This is a really exciting release because the ARC Fleet will actually have an enemy to play against.  The bad news is the Protolene don't have any heavy hitters at the moment in the form of vehicles or walkers, so we will just have to wait and see what CMGs comes up with.

I hope to have some good closeups of these figures this week, so stay tuned.  In the mean time head over to Dropship Horizon for some good close-ups of them in metal form.

Coming Soon
From Their Website

Spartan Games is most excited to announce that Firestorm Armada has arrived and will ship to stores around the world on November 23rd. Following in the footsteps of our incredibly successful Uncharted Seas fantasy naval game, Firestorm Armada builds on the foundations of this game to bring you easy to master rules, superb multi-part models (with spaceships up to 170mm long) and exciting action in a war torn area of space we call the Storm Zone.

At launch Firestorm Armada brings you four exciting fleets to begin your space combat: the Dindrenzi Federation, Terram Alliance, Aquan Prime and Sorylian Collective. Supporting these models is a 96 page full colour rule book, punch out A4 tokens and templates and our first four upgrade ships - a Fighter Carrier for each fleet.

Over the next two weeks we'll detail availability and pricing, and we're sure our launch partners will be giving you plenty of information as well. Our Firestorm web pages will be completely replaced with new info and pictures, showing you the exciting work our 3D modellers have done. Watch out for images, data sheets, schematics and more.

Welcome to our view of futuristic space combat,
The Spartan Team

Firestorm Armada battle scene. Painted by Josh Finney. Image Copyright 2009.

As the battle rages the Dindrenzi Battleship strikes home with a crippling blow, the effects of the critical hit felt along the entire length of the Sorylian Battleship. But the battle is far from over...several Sorylian Cruisers and two Carriers are heading into the combat - the Battleship may have taken a pounding, but there is plenty of firepower left in this fleet. We hope you like the combat scene created by our talented digital artist Josh Finney. Image Copyright (c) Spartan Games 2009.

I just discovered a website company called Snapdragon Studio.  The good news is they offer a large selection of really nice looking 6mm Sci-Fi buildings.  The bad news is......these are probably in limited supply.  If your interested in any of these buildings get them while their still around.

Here are just a few buildings I thought had a lot of character.

From Their Website

Important:  Please note as 1st November 2009.  All existing ranges will become unavailable as cast items. Stock only after 1st November.  Painted items are no longer available. Stock only.

Reason:  As some people may remember I had a problem with one of my arms some years ago. This has become increasingly painful and problematic over the years most notably the last year. Managing only 2 or 3 hours casting or painting a day is no longer viable. Contract casting is not an option. Too many different molds to manage.  Its time to call it a day on the general items listings.

What I can still do however is the master making.

So the plan is.  Limited edition sets of 50/ 100 only. All new items.

Example: Russian front saw mill with all associated outbuildings houses etc.  See In the works page

I think this is the most manageable solution for me. I have a set number of items that need casting and somebody to do it for me.  I’m enthusiastic about this this new direction and hope people will understand my decision for taking it.

Plasmablast Games was kind enough to send out some amazing samples for me to review.  To say these figures are gorgeous is an understatement.  Marios has done an outstanding job combining the talents of Elixirion Design Lab, 3dmiaoworks and Grey Army sculpture studio to make the perfect 6mm figures. The batch I received had zero flash, which I found simply amazing.  The figures were clean, crisp and free of any defects.

The Progenitor and Orbital Combine vehicles have a very high-tech feel to them.  Their low profile, makes them really stand out.  The Grav-Tanks have little tabs on the bottom, making them appear to hover.  Each army has heavy, medium and light tanks as well as some specialty units.  Both armies also have air support in the form of fast fighters and support crafts.  When a ground offensive really gets nasty, infantry is your best friend.  Plasmablast Games also carries infantry in the form of light and heavy troopers.

Wargames Factory has some really nice looking 6mm Sci-Fi Androids up for pre order.  When I checked their site they had 338 (83% pre-ordered) left to go.  According to their website, once they hit the magical number of 2000 pre-orders, they will start production.  To pre-order these cool looking figures go to Wargames Factory Pre-Order page.

Way back when I was young.  I am talking way back, I picked up some cool 6mm miniatures from a miniature line called MAATAC (Multi-functional Armed & Armored Tactical Attack Computer).  They were originally produced by Superior Models Inc.  You can still purchase these vehicles and rules from Monday Knight Productions.  If you're a 6mm fan and you haven't check these out, you have been missing some cool little vehicles.

Here is another great find for 15mm.  First up is the Star Wars Crab Droid (Huge) and then the normal Crab Droid.  Both these figures can usually be found on Ebay for $2-$3.  Check out the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars database for other great finds.

RAFM Miniatures just added some more 15mm figures to their lineup.  I will have a better review of a few of these figures in the coming days.  The figures tend to be a little smaller than what many of the new 15mm companies are producing.  I have found though that the quality is outstanding.  I was really impressed by the alien packs (War hounds of Sirius, Car Leonis Warriors, and Dracos Warriors).  In fact I was pretty blown away by how nice they were.  I didn't expect the overall detail and quality.  Whoever originally sculpted them was amazing.  These were the original traveler figures back in the early 80's.

Want a large tripod looking vehicle for your 15mm/28mm games.  Well then the Commerce Guild Homing Spider might really be to your liking.  The cool thing is you can usually pick these up on Ebay for around $2-4.  It is a fantastic deal from the Wizkids Star Wars range.  Check out the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars database for more info on the figure.

Even though the design was to have the Parasachnids to have their legs mounted lengthwise, I opted to mount mine widthwise.  IMO it makes more sense to mount them that way.

Two weeks ago I happened across a cool company called Plasma Blast Games run by Marios Damoulianos.  I was really impressed by both their 6mm product range as well as their website layout.  PBG currently have two different army offerings (Progenitor and Orbital Combine).  PBG also offers a Painting Service for those who wish to have their figures painted.  Pretty cool.

Need some good Alien Tripods in your 15mm games.  Black Hat Miniatures and Scale Creep Miniatures sell some really cool alien tripods.  There are two versions in their Martian Empire 18mm range (Martian Cephalod Tripod and Cephalod Handler Vehicle).  You can also find a few other vehicles in this range.  I really like the paint job on the Martian Cephalod Tripod below.

Critical Mass Games will be releasing their 3rd Wave of figures to include the ARC Fleet Heavy Tank and Arc Fleet Laser Defense Platform.   I must say these ARC Fleet Heavy Tanks look even better than even the drawings portrayed.  With all the extra metal guns options I am sure people will be using them for all sorts of conversions.  I am sure I will opt for the Tank Platoon.

From Craig of Critical Mass Games
Attached are a few shots of the Heavy tank resin components and some pictures of a mock up build, note that some of the components shown in this build will be metal in the production model.

We will be releasing two versions for the ARC Fleet heavy tank, the Mark I turret version, a buttoned up resin turret, and the Mark II Command turret which comes with two crew and two hatches which can be positioned as required. Both variants will be supplied with three barrel options, the rail gun, the cannon, and the energy gun, and two missile packs.

AFVH9 will be the ARC Fleet Heavy Tank MkI. £8.50
AFVH10 will be the ARC Fleet MkII. £9.50
AFVH11 will be the ARC Fleet heavy Tank Platoon consisting of 2 MkI kits and 1 MkII kit. £23.50

Khurasan Miniatures is at it again.  As soon as I order something from them, Jon comes out with another set of figures.  This time its the Mystri Island Bloodworm.

From Khurasan Miniatures Website

The females of this horrible species frequently reach lengths of 60 feet or more, and live underground, making multiple tunnels to the surface, then laying in wait below ground, sensing the slighted vibration and the best tunnel to use to surprise the unwary creature above the surface. The creature will then rush to the surface, impale the prey with its spiky mouthparts, and suck all of the juices from the creature, leaving a dried, leathery husk. Naturally the prey often attempts to fight back, but the bloodworm's segmented armour is like steel, protection from the sharpest spear or sword.

The males are small and inoffensive creatures that live at the roots of trees placidly sucking the sap, and are sought out by the females only for mating, though they are a delicacy on Mystri Island when they can be dug up.

A towering worm monster well over 25mm tall, this creature will be a serious menace for your Mystri Island adventurers, and would even give serious pause to a 28mm character! Sculpted by Mark Evans.  Bloodworm painted by Carl Robson.

So I played my first game of Alien Squad Leader last night.  Ok so it wasn't actually my first game, but it was my first game in Austin, Texas.  If you don't know about Alien Squad Leader then here is your chance to learn something new.

Alien Squad Leader was created by Alex Self.  It is a Sci-Fi combat ruleset designed for 15mm gaming.  The game itself is a mixture of various rule mechanics including Warmaster and HOTT, but also has its own unique style and flavor.  To win, you must break the enemy's army or have more victory points or both.  An army is broken when half it's stands are eliminated. Victory points are gained from battlefield objectives.

There is a great ASL yahoo group and the ruleset can be purchased from 15mm.co.uk

This year version 2.0 of ASL was released.  Below are some of the army lists from version 1.0 of Alien Squad Leader.  There are new armies and rules in version 2.0, but I haven't had a chance to read it yet.

  • Alien Enslaver - Aliens with psionic abilities and mindless thralls.
  • Alien Imperial - High tech aliens
  • Alien Imperial Strike Force - High tech aliens with power armor
  • Alien Warrior Caste - 40K Eldar type aliens
  • Cyborg Enslavers - 40K Dark Elf aliens
  • Hive Mind - Starship trooper type bugs
  • Human Colonial - 40k type imperials
  • Human Imperial - 40k type space marines
  • Imperial Strike Force - 40k type space marines and terminators
  • Mechanoid - 40k type Necrons or Terminator style army
  • Outlaw Gangs - Mad Max type armies

Save your money now because on October 26th Critical Mass Games will be releasing Wave 3 of the ARC Fleet Army to include the the long awaited ARC Fleet Heavy Tank (3 versions) and the Arc Fleet Laser Defense Platform.  Be sure to check the Critical Mass Games Forums for all the latest info and happenings.  If the heavy tank is anything like the ARC Fleet Heavy Walker, then people are going to be so pumped.  The Detail on the Walkers were outstanding and with John Bear Ross designing the ARC Fleet Heavy Tank you can expect nothing less.

Now some may not know this, but Dream Pod 9 has some really cool figures that are 15mm or close enough to work perfectly in 15mm games.  One set of figures is called FLAIL and they are located in their Heavy Gear CEF & PAK Miniatures line (FLAIL Platoon Pack[DP9-9142]).  When I first heard about these figures I wasn't quite sure how they would fit in, but after seeing them I am totally convinced.  Also check out Dream Pod 9's Gear Krieg line of 15mm figures and their Decal Packs.

Do you like grass hoppers?  Do you like praying mantises?  Well then your going to absolutely love these Mantis Stalkers.  Khurasan Miniatures will be releasing another winner (Release date TBA).  Look for them probably in a month or two.

These are deployed by drop pod by the Pelagic Dominate, often hours, days or even weeks before an invasion. They sow mayhem in the enemy lines, as they are able to stalk the enemy whilst nearly invisible, slowly creeping forward or ensconced in an ambush position, standing motionless for hours or even days before striking precisely and with lightning speed.

If the invasion fails, they often go feral and constitute a major menace to the sentient population.

Two stalking poses, two striking poses.

Khurasan Miniatures has done it again.  They are coming out with another great troop release called the Felids.  I had seen these in metal form on Dropship Horizon's blog, but seeing them painted up by Chris Yaro gives you another perspective as to how good these figures are.  Chris has really been able to bring out the wonderful character in these figures.

Old Crow Models has been around for quite some time, but many people still don't know they exist.  Old Crow has a fantastic range of 15mm and 28mm vehicles as well as other cool resin products.  Many of the vehicles have 3 option types (tracked, wheeled or grav) and some also have different turret types.  All in all a ton of vehicles to choose from.

Some people might be surprised to find that Hydra Miniatures has some really cool figures that are perfect for 15mm Sci-Fi.  These figures include the Retro Raygun Robots Legion Hoverbots and Minibots as well as the Primal Dawn Vardu Sprouts.  Hydra Miniatures also has a fantastic gallery of painted figures to drool over and get ideas from, so be sure to check it out.

I would like to thank Matthew Beauchamp for sending out these samples for me to preview.  I found the Hydra figures to have limited flash/excess metal, which was easily removed.   I based the Minirobots and Sprouts on 25mm bases rather than my standard 20mm bases for 15mm stuff.

Just recently Khurasan Miniatures released two sets (Command/HMG and Trooper packs) of shark looking Sci-Fi creatures known as the Karkarine.  I wasn't sure if I would like these figures or not.  They are definitely different in many ways from other Sci-Fi figures out there.  They seem to have an almost pulpish feel to them.  I am glad to report that after painting one of these figures up, I must say I have found them to be quite good in cast quality and likability.  The thing is, these figures really do grow on you.  They are simply fun to game with.

Just received the Khurasan Miniatures Pelagic Dominate "Man of War" Heavy Anti-Grav Vehicle Main Battle Tank.  From Khurasan's website, it is a little hard to tell how big this vehicles is.  I am happy to announce that you will not be disappointed.  The tank is a perfect size for 15mm, not too big or small.  The detail on the tank is outstanding.  I did find that there were a couple of areas that needed sanding where the resin was injected into the mold, but nothing a few minutes worth of filing/sanding didn't fix.  Since the tank is an anti-grav vehicle, it also came with a flying base and rod (That part of the kit is white metal).   The rest of the parts are made out of resin, but I would have liked the gun barrel and side attachments to be made out of white metal as well.  I am always a little timid when gun barrels are resin, because I know it is just a matter of time before I break them.  This of course probably would have raised the price, so you have to weigh that against not having them in metal.  Other than that the model is perfect and looks really high tech.

Just received some very cool figures from Jon at Khurasan Miniatures called Parasachnids.  If you liked Starship Troopers, you're going to love these figures.  If you like bugs that have very large mouths you're going to love these figures.  The Parasachnids come in two parts (Body and Legs).  They are very easy to put together and my copies were free of flash and excess metal except for a little on the ends of the legs, which was easily removed. The only issue you may have with these figures is finding the appropriate base size.   Normally I base my 15mm figures for the most part on 20mm washers, but these will most likely require a 30mm base.  That will give you an idea how big they are.  So cool.  It is a little hard to see, but the figures also have 2 sets of arms/legs on the side of their bodies.  I can already see people buying large armies of these to re-enact some type of Starship Trooper encounter.

Just received the new ARC Fleet Combat Walker from Critical Mass Games.  I have to say the pictures just do not do this model justice in any way, shape or form.  You really have to see the model to appreciate how good it truly is.  The model comes in 6 parts ( 2 body, 2 legs and 2 metal feet) with weapon options that range from Chin guns (Not Chain Guns) single or double, Cannon Wings, and Missile Wings.  There is also an optional driver, hatch and metal gun with each Walker.

I found the resin parts to be extremely clean and free of bubbles.  You will need to do some minor filing where the resin was injected into the mold.  The metal parts didn't need any filing that I could see.  Critical Mass Games was cool enough to also allow for the purchase of Platoons (3 Walkers), which when purchased, saves a little $$ or Pounds or whatever your currency is.  My Walkers did not come with the optional Missile Wings, since I ordered the Cannon Support Walker Platoon.

Ever wanted some Sci-Fi reptilian creatures in your 15mm games.  Well my friends look no further than the Garn Alien Warriors by Khurasan Miniatures.  These figures are big, bad and hungry and truly make other 15mm look small next to them.  The Garn are actually quite cool and come with multiple guns to equip them with.  I didn't really find the guns to be all that different looking, with the exception of the heavy weapons.

From There Website

these are a sentient Reptilian species that evolved from a race similar to the great Tyrannosaurs of old Earth. Hulking and powerful, the exclusively carnivorous Garn are driven by two hearts and a relentless appetite for flesh and booty. These warriors need little protection other than their own thick, scaly skin as each wears an advanced technology force field on its back, and they carry large weapons of considerable power. In short, the normal Garn warrior is easily a match for the elite power armoured terran soldier, and is possessed of an irresistible will to conquer.

For all those Alien fans out there, Khurasan Miniatures has a product that you're going to love.  They are called the Space Demon Hive  The pictures really don't do them justice.  IMO these are by far the best Alien looking figures to date.  Each warrior pack of 8 figures comes with in two head variants and 4 body variants.  Warriors come in 3 flavors (Assault, Hammerhead and Demon Infiltrator).  The Assault Warriors and the Demon Infiltrators look most like the Alien creatures in the movie Alien.  There is also a Demon Queen and a Demon King.  Both those figures are quite large and are about double the size of the Warriors.

Matchbox has a vehicle that is just perfect for 15mm Sci-Fi games.  Plan on spending about $1-$2 per vehicle.  An excellent value all around.  It has been produced under many names and comes in many different paint jobs.  If you do a Google search for "Matchbox Armored Response Vehicle" or "Matchbox Armored Police Vehicle" you should be able to find lots of them.  You may even be able to find them at a local toy store that sells Matchbox cars.  The rear top of the vehicle slides backwards to reveal seats and a console.

I have had these miniatures with me since the early 1980's.  I believe they were first produced by Tabletop Games or something to that effect.  I finally got around to painting them up proper.  As it turns out these figures are quite good and stand up nicely next to some of the best 15mm Sci-Fi figures today.  You can still purchase these figures from 15mm.co.uk under the Laserburn line of Sci-Fi figures.

Want some cool bugs?  Heresy Miniatures has a set of figures that many people probably don't know about called the HellMites

I came across these figures some time ago and they have been collecting dust waiting to be used.  They are perfect for both 15mm and 28mm games.

Did you say 15mm Supers?  Oh yea, what game wouldn't be a blast without a few Supers to spice things up.  You can buy these figures from Old Glory 25s.
(codes S15A and S15B).  Check out the Four Color Figures Blog.  Maybe we will see some 15mm apes in the not to far off future.

This miniature is now out of print and no longer available.  It was called the Burrower Bug from the Starship Troopers game by Mongoose Publishing.  I was lucky enough to purchase 2 of these suckers before they went the way of the Dodo.  The figure is one bug hunk of metal and always looks good on the table top.  It sort of reminded me of the worms on Dune.  You still can probably find these on Ebay, TMP or maybe on Bartertown

Every now and again you come across a figure that looks fun. The Apis Walker Bug sold by Brigade Models is just one of those figures. It just asks to be put in some type of scenario.  The model was sculpted by Germy of GermsWorld. Brigade Models has a pretty good selection of 15mm vehicles.

I am so pumped about these walkers.  Critical Mass Games IMO did an outstanding job on these blending the perfect mix of Resin and metal parts.  They also plan on having a group discount purchase if you buy 3 walkers of the same type.

Press Release:

We are happy to announce that Wave 2 of our planned releases will be on sale from Monday 21st September.  Included in this months releases are the much awaited ARC Fleet Combat Walker.

The Walker will be available in 4 variants.  All walkers are also supplied with one random crewman.  In addition, there will be 'platoon' box sets of 3 Scout Walkers at £23.00 or 3 Heavy Support (all same type) for £29.00.

All of these box set qualify for free world wide postage which we offer on all orders over £20.00.  Alongside the Walker we also have the 2nd wave of ARC Fleet foot troops, 8 packs of ARC Fleet Rifle Infantry. Each pack contains 8 figures, 3 poses, and are £3.20 each.

Ground Zero Games - Free Trader Pack A

This pack of figures looks absolutely amazing and could easily pass as the perfect Firefly crew or any other sci-fi crew.  I placed an order for these and they are on their way.  Once I get them I will write up a nice review.  It is very refeshing to have sci-fi females that aren't over the top.  These sculpts look amazing.
